Fredericks Foundation announced as a code signatory to the Investing in Women Code.

Fredericks Foundation has been announced as a code signatory to the Investing in Women Code.

The Investing in Women Code is a commitment by financial services firms to improving female entrepreneurs’ access to tools, resources and finance. An HM Treasury announcement on 12 August 2019 revealed Fredericks Foundation and three other organisations have been approved as code signatories.

Duncan Parker, chief executive of Fredericks Foundation, said:

“Fredericks Foundation has been committed to equality since inception. In recent years though we have realised that to redress imbalances in society we need to be more proactive in our efforts. Though numbers have increased, women are still under-represented in enterprise. Moreover, women often have responsibilities that make traditional employment difficult, especially if under zero-hours contracts. In 2018 in the UK, lone parents with dependent children represented 25% of all families with dependent children, and women account for 91% of lone parents. Many women are also carers for elderly, sick or disabled family members.

“For some of these women, self-employment represents the best or only opportunity to work. That is why Fredericks Foundation has a loan fund focused specifically at female entrepreneurs so that support and capital is available for those wanting to create their own business and a life of financial independence. It was an easy decision therefore to become signatories to the Investing in Women Code as doing so is part of our DNA.”

Fredericks wins Citi Microentrepreneurship Award for Resilience

Fredericks Foundation have received the honour of being awarded the Citi Microentrepreneurship Award 2019 for Resilience in helping people who struggle to find access to funding.

Citi Award smaller.jpg

Launched in 2013 in the UK, the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards were established by the Citi Foundation to recognise best-in-class microentrepreneurs and celebrate the responsible finance sector and their contribution to national economies. The 2019 awards were delivered by a partnership between Responsible Finance and the Citi Foundation.

This award recognises a successful responsible finance provider which has shown resilience and consistency in its delivery of access to finance, especially to groups that often struggle to access finance such as women and those from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

It celebrates organisations which have shown determination in overcoming difficulties, which have delivered on their targets in changing or challenging market conditions, or which have adapted to survive or grow but stayed focused on their mission.

This Award also celebrates the performance of Responsible Finance providers against up to 6 of the The UN Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 1, No poverty; Goal 3, Good Health and Well-being; Goal 5, Gender Equality; Goal 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth; Goal 10, Reduced Inequalities; Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Fredericks were delighted to receive this award and the prize fund of £20,000, which will go a long way to help us continue our work and help others succeed.

City of London Gourmet Challenge off to a flying start

Dans le noir.jpg

We’re pleased to announce that we kicked off in style with the first of what will be an annual fundraising event for Fredericks. We decided to try something new, something dark, something tasteful.

Held at the famous Dans Le Noir restaurant, our Gourmet Challenge determined which financial company has the best blind taste buds in London.

DLN2.jpg

Participants were led into complete darkness to taste and guess the delicious wine and food cooked by MasterChef finalist and client of Fredericks, Ben Piette.  This enticing experience was followed by the world’s first auction in the dark hosted by celebrity auctioneer Jamie Breese, which saw an array of kindly donated items.

Every pound of the £16,000 raised has come directly to Fredericks, thanks to the generosity from all involved. This will enable us to work with Lester, a Royal Marines reservist who approached Fredericks for help building his book keeping business, and contribute towards the funding of other inspirational people who have come to Fredericks for support with their business dreams.

We would like to thank everyone who gave their time or donations to make this event come to life and congratulations to Libra, the current taste bud champions of the finance industry. But who will take the crown next year?

Let us know if you would like to join us next time.

Inspiring Client Story
Carly Ward TEEG Digital

Carly Ward.png

“I would highly recommend Frederick’s Foundation to anyone who can’t get support through any mainstream providers. Fredericks Foundation really care about doing what’s right for you and the team are so friendly and approachable. I can’t thank Fredericks Foundation enough for everything you have done for my business and the genuine support and belief I have received.”

Carly saw a gap in the market to deliver Digital Marketing Apprenticeships in the Buckinghamshire area and TEEG Digital was created. In the first year Carly worked really hard to get the local college to agree to partner with them as her business was too small to have a direct contract with the Government.

“We have now been delivering Apprenticeships for around 2 years and although we aren’t a big provider, being small allows us to have personal relationships with all our employers and Apprentices and we are able to deliver a fantastic service and high quality training.

We are really passionate about how Apprenticeships change lives for the better and we are proud we have created 17 jobs so far.”

Carly was unable to get a loan from banks and other lenders as she already had quite a large overdraft as her business model had changed resulting in her accounts for the previous year not looking healthy enough, so no-one was prepared to take anymore risk. Until she came to Fredericks Foundation!

Struggling with anxiety and at times not being able to work properly led Carly to start up her own business.

“I still struggle with anxiety but having an organisation like Frederick’s Foundation believe in what we are doing has had a big impact and was exactly the motivation I needed to take the business to the next level.”

It’s not been easy for Carly and she has experienced really hard times where she nearly closed down due to changes in Government funding. But she never gave up, she just changed with the times which is why she went into Apprenticeships and it was the best decision she ever made!

“Nothing stays the same in business these days! It really is onwards and upwards from now where as a while ago it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel it was more like a train!”

The loan Carly received from Fredericks Foundation will help grow her business to the next level by signing up with an exam board to give the Apprentices their qualifications; re-branding the company; website development; social media campaigns, and exam fees for the learners.

Carly is already on her way to success. She now employs a full time Apprentice, uses a team of freelancers and will be employing more staff soon to help with project management and overseeing training for Apprentices, as well as visiting employers and networking to generate business.

 Mentor Training Voted A Success

mentor training day.jpg

Thursday 18th October was the date for the second of two mentor training days held this year. This time the training was held in our Lightwater HQ.

The training once again was given by the impressive founder of the ‘Association of Business Mentors’ Kerrie Dorman. 10 volunteer mentors, both male and female attended, and all expressed their great satisfaction with the day.

The critique sheets returned so far, indicate that the day was rated 9.75/10 and 100% of attendees said that they would like to return next year for the intermediate level training that we are planning.

Comments so far include:
‘’Well done to Fredericks for continuing to support their volunteers with some excellent training from the Association of Business Mentors. A thoroughly enjoyable, engaging and value adding day.’’
Angela Fumpson

‘’Thank you for organising an excellent training day. The day comprised relevant and thoughtful content, delivered by an excellent trainer and it was a real pleasure to meet the other mentors and to engage even more fully with the Fredericks Foundation Team.’’
Peter Kroeger

‘’I thoroughly enjoyed the mentor training day. It was the combination of informality and friendliness that is so much a part of the Frederick’s culture, combined with an excellent teacher in Kerrie and a very engaging group of people in the room, that made the day such a rewarding experience. I learned a lot but more importantly, I feel inspired to develop my mentoring skills and would welcome any further opportunities to do so. With huge thanks to all those involved in creating a very enjoyable day’’
Graham Painter

If you are interested in hearing about future mentor training days please send your name and contact details to Peter Kelly, Fredericks Volunteer Manager, at peter@fredericksfoundation.org
